Sounded good, didn’t it? Wow, we’re finally going to do something about this oil thing. This trade deficit thing: oil. No more hard times. Yellow brick road forever.

Right. Who’s kidding whom? America is more dependent on foreign oil today than we were in the 1970s. So much for the Department of Energy. It’s nothing more than a big expense to taxpayers."

The Associated Press: 90 dead in southern China flooding; 1.4M evacuated

"BEIJING — The death toll from flooding this week in southern China rose to 90 Saturday, and 1.4 million people were evacuated as the inundated region prepared for more heavy storms.
Fifty people were also missing in nine provinces and regions across China's south, the state flood control office said. Water levels have surged passed safe levels in dozens of rivers, including the Pearl River in the heart of China's manufacturing region. China Central Television footage Saturday showed people stranded on rooftops of nearly completely submerged homes."

"Two weeks before a total eclipse of the sun crosses over the South Pacific, the moon will put on a sky show of its own — a partial lunar eclipse that should be visible from parts of North America, weather permitting.

The lunar eclipse will occur in the early morning hours of June 26 as the moon crosses through the southern portion of Earth's shadow in the constellation Sagittarius. At least some of this interesting event will be visible from western and central North America.

Iraqi al-Qaida man kills own father

"BAGHDAD — A man linked with the Al-Qaida insurgency in Iraq shot and killed his own father while he slept in his bed Friday for his refusal to quit his work as an interpreter for the US military, police said. The deadly attack was unusual in that it targeted an immediate family member for murder because of collaborating with the enemy.

Hameed al-Daraji, 50, worked as a contractor and translator for the US military for seven years since shortly after the US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003."

Nevada Bank Shut, 83rd Failure This Year - CBS News

"Regulators on Friday shut down a Nevada bank, raising to 83 the number of U.S. bank failures this year.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. took over Nevada Security Bank, based in Reno, with $480.3 million in assets and $479.8 million in deposits. Umpqua Bank, based in Roseburg, Ore., agreed to assume the assets and deposits of the failed bank.

The failure of Nevada Security Bank is expected to cost the deposit insurance fund $80.9 million."

As Oil Spews in Gulf, BP CEO Attends Yacht Race - CBS News

Just when it seemed Gulf residents couldn't get any more outraged about the massive oil spill fouling their coastline, word came Saturday that BP's CEO was taking time off to attend a glitzy yacht race in England.

Tony Hayward's latest public relations gaffe didn't sit well with people in the U.S. who have seen their livelihoods ruined by the massive two-month oil spill.

'Man, that ain't right. None of us can even go out fishing, and he's at the yacht races,' said Bobby Pitre, 33, who runs a tattoo shop in Larose, La. 'I wish we could get a day off from the oil, too.'"
